Who doesn’t love a pool party to kick off the summer? Here’s how you can make yours the best of the season!
1) Make it a themed shindig
Everyone loves a themed party and many people will get super into the festivities. Encourage pool party goers to dress in costume. Make food or drinks that compliment your theme and invite guests to do the same.
Under the sea is a great theme to consider because there are so many ways to get creative with it. Mermaids, dolphins, Finding Nemo, you name it.
The possibilities are endless!
2) Get a portable pool
Don’t count yourself out of the pool party game just because you don’t have a permanent swimming option in your backyard. Portable swimming pools are an awesome option to make your normal cookout into a pool party!
The options for portable pools get better and better each year. They are perfect if you have space but don’t want to necessarily commit to a permanent pool.
3) Belly Flop/Diving Contest

Make a signup list for contestants to enter. Set up a long table for the judging panel to sit at. Create a scoring criteria and score cards so that you can keep track.
It is great to see all your guests together cheering each other on and creating friendly competition. Don’t forget to have medals and prizes for the winners!
4) Play some old-fashioned pool games
Marco Polo is not to be taken lightly. One of the oldest, and most fun, games in the book.
Play a game of push the watermelon. See who can push the watermelon across the pool the fastest without their feet touching the bottom.
Dive for rings and see who can come up with the most in the littlest amount of time.
Set up a game of pool basketball.
Play these games in teams or individually. Everyone loves a little competition.
5) Balloons, balloons, and more balloons
Nothing says party quite like balloons. Nothing says pool party cookout quite like water balloons.
You can do some awesome decorating of your pool and backyard with balloons.
Try decorating the pool with water balloons. Once all your guests arrive, invite them to go in the pool and take the water balloons out to the yard for a water balloon fight.
6) Frozen treats
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!
Everyone loves an ice cream sundae bar. This is great to do outside because it can be a bit messy. No cleanup and the kids can hop right in the pool after.
Looking for something a bit healthier? Try some homemade popsicles.
You can even make alcoholic versions for the adults.
